| | | Thanks to you, the Johnson-Ross family (pictured here) have a safe, warm place to sleep tonight. Kinah and Samuel were living in a Sarasota County rental that they could afford along with their other expenses prior to being forced to move when their landlord decided to sell the home. Unfortunately, due to the housing market in Sarasota County, they were only able to find a new home at $1895/month. The new landlord agreed to allow the last month’s rent to be split amongst 3 payments to be paid by 10/01/2022. Both adults in the home have employment and income to cover their expenses when able to work their hours. However, Saminah was diagnosed with RSV and had been unable to go to childcare resulting in Kinah missing shifts/losing income throughout the month of August and early September. Kinah heard about Family Promise of South Sarasota County’s Open Doors Program and contacted the Family Service Coordinator to request assistance. Upon review of her documents and verifications, the coordinator was able to verify that the Ross family was able to sustain the $1895/month rent and other household expenses but needed assistance with 09/2022 and 10/2022 due to the temporary hardship. FPSSC assisted the family with $1263.34 in rent assistance to ensure the family would be able to remain stably housed. When asked about their experience with FPSSC, Kinah and Samuel stated, “Family Promise has been more than generous to our family. With each interaction, they were very kind. The documents that are required for assistance were not extreme and were easy to provide to the worker. We appreciate the help and the agency for what they do for families in need.” |

| | Over the past two years, the COVID-19 pandemic and accompanying financial hardships have underlined and exacerbated the housing unaffordability faced by the nation’s lowest-income renters. Housing advocates and impacted people achieved unprecedented policy measures, including $46 billion in emergency rental assistance (ERA) and a national eviction moratorium, that significantly reduced unnecessary suffering during the pandemic. But these temporary measures were not intended to solve persistent problems of housing affordability. As state and local ERA programs begin to run out of funding and the last eviction moratoriums expire, the persistent shortage of affordable housing for the lowest-income people is worsening. Eviction rates in some cities are increasing to or surpassing their pre-pandemic levels (Eviction Lab, 2022). At the same time, renters nationwide are facing exorbitant rent increases, with the median rent of a two-bedroom apartment increasing nearly 18% between the first quarter of 2021 and the first quarter of 2022 (Apartment List, 2022). As the public health dangers and economic hardship associated with COVID-19 gradually recede, low-income renters will continue to face housing precarity and instability until permanent solutions to widespread housing unaffordability are enacted. |

| | | Every child deserves to sleep in a warm, safe bed in a place they call home. Make The Promise and join us in the fight against homelessness. Your Promise can make that happen by helping families secure affordable workforce housing in South Sarasota County. The Promise is All About Less Talk and More Action Food, Water, Shelter… Those are the 3 basic needs for any human being. Yet, because of the housing crisis in the South Sarasota community, local families, including children, are going without one of those basic needs. Shelter. That’s why, in 2015, Family Promise of South Sarasota County opened its doors. In the years since, we’ve helped hundreds of local families by building affordable workforce housing and offering support where they need it. When you join The Promise, your monthly donation gives families in our local community the opportunity to feel safe. To feel stable. And to feel hopeful for the future! Family Promise of South Sarasota County is working to tackle the housing crisis that exists in our community. We’re working, with people like you, to build more affordable workforce housing so children have a place they can call home! As a member of The Promise, you can give these families the support they need to keep a roof over their heads and restore hope in their hearts. |
